The best time to visit Sri Lanka is generally during the dry seasons, which are from December to March on the West coast and May to September on the East coast. However, it’s a year-round destination with diverse climates depending on the region. I visited during February and travelled all over the country and had amazing weather. Be aware that in the central province, if you’re staying in the hills, it is much cooler than the rest of the country so you may need a jumper or other warmer clothing.

How to get around in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka has a well-developed transportation system. Taxis, tuk-tuks, and buses are common modes of local transportation, some areas of the country have ‘Uber’ and a similar app called ‘Pick Me’. Trains also offer scenic routes, especially through the central highlands, and although they are much slower, it’s an attraction in itself, so well worth doing at least once.

Do I need a visa to visit Sri Lanka?

Yes, most visitors to Sri Lanka require a visa, though there are some exceptions. Always keep updated on the relevant GOV websites, and if needed you can apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) online before your trip.

Yes, respecting local customs is important. The main religion is Sri Lanka is Buddhism and you’ll also find Hindu Temples, Mosques and Churches around the country too. Remember to always dress modestly when visiting religious sites and remove shoes before entering homes or temples. Different religious sites have different dress codes so please ensure you are prepared before your visit. Some sites will have clothes and scarfs for you to rent or buy for your visit, however this isn’t the case everywhere so please be prepared.

What are some must-visit attractions in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka offers a variety of attractions, including Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, Yala National Park for wildlife, the beaches of Unawatuna, and of course, the scenic train ride to Ella. You can also go whale watching and dolphin spotting, but please opt for an ethical non-chasing tour if you do this.

Is it easy to find vegetarian or vegan food in Sri Lanka?

Yes, Sri Lankan cuisine includes many vegetarian and vegan options. Rice and curry meals often feature a variety of vegetable dishes.
