An Autumn New Forest Escape – The Huntsman of Brockenhurst.

In need of a weekend away, we headed to The New Forest which is our go-to last-minute escape, seeing as its only a few hours drive from home. We absolutely love visiting the New Forest, it’s perfect for long scenic drives, endless walks, coffee shops and snug hotels. It was so stunning during autumn, more so than any other time of year – everywhere you look there are miles of red, orange and yellow, with horses, cows and donkeys plodding along just minding their own business. We loved the scenery and walks so much during autumn, that were going to make this November trip a yearly tradition!

The Huntsman of Brockenhurst

We stayed at The Huntsman of Brockenhurst during this trip, and we absolutely loved it; everything was perfect with our room, the food and service; I couldn’t fault them. They have a car park on site which is perfect, or, if you come by train it is only a five-minute walk away from Brockenhurst train station along with the local shops and cafès. There are restaurants nearby, but honestly you don’t need to go any further than downstairs, to the Huntsman restaurant where you can enjoy a variety of food and drinks.

The Hotel room

We stayed in one of the rooms in the garden area, ‘The Goose’ and it was beautiful. High ceilings with beams and cute little windows. Gorgeous furniture, a huge bed, smart TV and a brilliant tea and coffee-making facility in the room with a Nespresso machine! The bathroom was very modern which is important as no one wants to stay somewhere with a grubby old shower. The room was so cosy and snug – perfect for hiding away from the cold weather outside. The circle of rooms outside was so pretty and would be amazing in the summer for evening drinks and relaxing in the garden. There are also more rooms inside the main building above the restaurant – a total of 13 across the site.

The Restaurant

The restaurant at the Huntsman is classy and modern – the perfect place for a date or even a gathering for friends and family. On show from the restaurant there is a pizza oven so you can watch your wood fired pizza being prepped and cooked – yum! The restaurant also sells a selection of high quality steaks cooked in a charcoal oven to give it that unique smoky flavour.

For starters, we tried the leek and potato soup, and the three cheese arancini. The leek and potato soup was deliciously green and came along with charred sourdough bread to dip which was fresh and crunchy. The three cheese arancini was really soft and creamy on the inside and crispy on the outside which was absolutely perfect dipped in the garlic mayo.

The main course was to die for – I had the pan-fried chicken breast with chorizo, sautéed potatoes and a creamy mushroom sauce. The chicken was amazing and really tender, the sauce was made with wild mushrooms which gave it the most amazing flavour – I’d highly recommend this main dish. Lewis had the smokey beef brisket burger which was oozing with smoky flavour and cheesy goodness, but be prepared – this one is a messy main!

For dessert, we ordered the sticky toffee pudding and gooey chocolate brownie and they were both melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The brownie was one of the best I have ever tried, it was so gooey and came with chocolate mousse, if you have a sweet tooth – you’ll try this! The sticky toffee pudding was also good and very light – the toffee sauce was oozing out of the sponge and vanilla pod ice cream went perfectly.

The Breakfast

Last but not least… was breakfast! We enjoyed a cosy lie in, and off to breakfast we went. We helped ourselves to juice, tea and coffee – there were also pastries and continental breakfast selections to help yourself to – but we saved any room left in our tummy for a cooked breakfast! We both had the English Breakfast and it was delicious; we had bacon, eggs, sausage, mushroom, tomato, black pudding, hash browns and beans! It was the perfect start to our morning and fuelled us for the rest of the day.

We love the new forest! We want to go again next summer and have looked at a few hotels but this one looks perfect. I know you said it’s close to the train station and local shops but it a very busy area? I love when the hotel has a good restaurant on site so you can have a drink without getting a taxi or walking around at night. I’ll let you know if I end up booking this place. Thanks for the tip! 🙂

      Hi Tracey.
Although it’s in a more built up area of The New Forest, it’s not too busy. If you drive further North in the area it gets a lot quieter if you’re looking for a less touristy spot!
I hope you enjoy your trip there next summer!
