A Weekend Away in Robin Hood’s Bay.
A weekend away in the UK is a must whether you live here or not, there are so many beautiful areas to explore, with each one offering something different from the last. Tucked away on the coastline of North York Moors is a beautiful little village, Robin Hood’s Bay. Its name comes from the legend, that Robin Hood once retrieved loot from French pirates in the bay, and returned it to the poor people in the village, so they named the bay after him. The bay is known as a small fishing town, home to independent shops, vibrant pubs and beautiful cottages. It’s the perfect place for a weekend getaway, whether that be as couple, solo traveler, or family – there is so much for all to enjoy in this picturesque town.
What to do in the Bay.
There are countless things to do in Robin Hood’s Bay, no matter who you are travelling with. This is a place where you can enjoy a relaxing break or an adventurous trip, it’s completely up to you! If you are after a relaxing break, then my best advice would be to bring your beach chairs, and set up for a quiet day by the sea. There are plenty of places just steps away from the beach to grab a drink, bite or even an ice-cream! Why not take a stroll around the bay, explore each and every street and have a look around the quaint little shops? If you’re looking for something a bit different, there are ghost walks around the bay, so why not tag along and listen to the ‘Tales of the Strange and Supernatural’, aimed for ages 4 and above – hope you don’t scare easy!
If you’re feeling a little bit adventurous, there are a couple of beautiful walking routes with gorgeous sea views throughout. The first is the walk along the coastline, down to Ravenscar which is just under 4 miles each way, and takes roughly 1.5 hours. The other walking route takes you up to Whitby, and this route is about 5.5 miles each way and takes around 2 hours. Both routes have beautiful views along the way, and lead to gorgeous towns to explore. If you enjoy nature, there is also a beautiful waterfall to explore, a 15 minute drive from Robin Hood’s Bay, or you can walk there, the walk is about 5.5 miles each way and takes roughly 2 hours depending on your pace. Head to Falling Foss Tea Garden, grab a Yorkshire tea and start exploring – the waterfall is just next to the tea garden. By far, my favourite thing to do in the bay, is wake up early and watch the sunrise from the sea wall, with a cup of tea made at Bronte Cottage.
How to get there.
Robin Hood’s Bay is completely accessible with or without a car. If you’re driving, there is a car park at the top of the bay, and a larger car park just a little further up. You can drive to the bottom of the bay, however there is no where to park. If you’re staying, drive down to your accommodation to drop your stuff off and then head up to the car parks. Travelling without a car? Robin Hood’s Bay is totally accessible without a car. You can get there from London by using public transport. The easiest route is to get the train from London Kings Cross to Scarborough and then get the bus to the bay, which you can find just outside the train station. Alternatively, once in Scarborough you can get a taxi to the bay (roughly £15 one way).
Spend the Night in Bronte Cottage.
Bronte Cottage is the cosiest place to stay in the Bay. It is tucked away right in the bottom of the bay, meaning you’re just a few steps away from the beach, where you can catch the most beautiful sunrise in the morning. Another spot to watch the sunrise, and so close to Bronte Cottage that we even took mugs of tea, is the Sea Wall. How to get there? Just exit the cottage, and on the other side of the road you’ll see an opening that’ll lead you to the most beautiful sea view. The cottage caters for 4 people, with a double bed in the master bedroom and two single beds in the upper bedroom. A relaxing bath in the newly decorated bathroom ensures you can unwind after a long day exploring. The kitchen caters for everything you have in mind, with an oven, hob, microwave, kettle and all the kitchenware you may need. The cottage was absolutely perfect, and I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again. Prices start at £240 based on a three night stay.
