50 Incredible Things to do in Sri Lanka
As someone who has travelled to over 60 countries, I’m often asked where I’d recommend people to go the most. And that’s a really hard question because it really does depend on who is travelling, what they enjoy doing, whether they want a luxurious trip or a backpacking experience. But Sri Lanka is one of the few places that can easily accommodate pretty much every option, and do it well. Best Time of Year to Visit Sri Lanka
The best time to travel Sri Lanka is between December and April. This is when most of the country experiences dry weather, making it ideal for a first-time visit where you plan to see a little bit of everything and make multiple stops.
However, Sri Lanka is one of those rare destinations where there’s always somewhere sunny, no matter the season so don’t worry if you’re not able to plan your trip during the peak months, you’ll still be able to see parts of Sri Lanka. Whether you’re visiting Sri Lanka for beaches, wildlife, culture or adventure, you can tailor your itinerary around the weather.

Best Hotels in Sri Lanka
There are some really beautiful hotels in Sri Lanka, some of which are the best I’ve stayed in around the world. You can stay in a range of amazing places from tented camps to luxury all inclusive safari hotels. There are unique huts and cool designs, fancy modern hotels as well as beautiful home stays if you want to stay with a local and get a real authentic experience.
I have a full post about where to stay in Sri Lanka, click here to read. But I’ll pop a few of my favourite spots below:

50 Incredible Things to do in Sri Lanka
Sunrise Kayaking Through Water Lilies
This was one of my favourite things to do in Sri Lanka and is definitely pretty unique. If you love slow, calm mornings with beautiful sunrises and gorgeous views then this is the perfect activity for you. In Anuradhapura, you’ll find this beautiful, peaceful lake full of water lilies and you can spend the morning kayaking through the water and watching the sun rise.
This experience is only bookable through the hotel Uga Ulagalla, which is one of the best hotels in Sri Lanka by far. It is a little pricey but I promise it is well worth every penny and there’s an amazing range of experiences exclusive to the hotel on offer here. If you want to book a stay at hotel Uga Ulagalla, click here and secure your dates in.

Night Hike to see Loris in Sigiriya
If you want to see something really unique in Sri Lanka, then you have to join this night hike to see the Loris in Sigiriya. The Grey Slender Loris is an endangered and nocturnal animal, and they’re becoming harder to spot so if you’re a nature lover then this is one of the best things to do in Sri Lanka.
On this tour you will join an experienced guide go on a night walk through the jungle to spot the Loris in the wild. This is such an incredible experience and something you must do before these adorable animals become extinct. You can book a tour to see the Loris, here.
Sunset Horse Riding in the Lake
This was one of the most memorable things I did in Sri Lanka and every time I post about it on my socials people go crazy for it. The horses here are very well cared for and you can book a horse riding experience at sunset, where you ride on horseback from the hotel, over to the lake where you’ll go in. The horses love this so much, as soon as they get into the water they start splashing and exploring, it’s such a special experience and one I highly recommend you do; the details on how to book this are below.
This experience is only bookable if you’re staying at hotel Uga Ulagalla, which is one of the best hotels in Sri Lanka by far. It is a little pricey but I promise it is well worth every penny and there’s an amazing range of experiences exclusive to the hotel on offer here. If you want to book a stay at hotel Uga Ulagalla, click here and secure your dates in.
If you want to go horse riding in Sri Lanka but do not plan to stay at hotel Uga Ulagalla, then I’ve listed a great alternative in Nuwara Eliya, below.

Horse Riding in Nuwara Eliya
If you fancy a bit of horse riding whilst in Sri Lanka, then this is a great place to do it. This horse riding experience takes you on a very scenic tour to beautiful spots such as Eagle Viewpoint. You can choose from a 1 to 4 hour horse riding experience and it works for both experienced riders and beginners too.
You can book this horse riding experience, here.
Stay in a Tented Camp in Kalpitiya
This was one of my most memorable stays in Sri Lanka and if like me, you enjoy doing something a little less touristy, and a lot closer to nature whilst still keeping your comforts and luxuries then this is the spot for you. Kodev is a gorgeous tented camp in Kalpitiya, a much quieter and less touristy area of Sri Lanka which is perfect for a calm escape, close to nature, still with a bit of adventure.
At Kodev, you can opt to chill and relax, or you can go on lots of adventures from kayaking, dolphin watching and national park drives. We even went crab hunting at night in the mangrove trees which was an incredibly unique experience.

Go Night Crab Hunting in the Mangroves
If you’re staying at Kodev, then one of the most amazing experiences you can book here is going crab hunting in the mangroves. You’ll head out at night from the tented camp into the mangroves with a guide and look for crabs. It’s a strange feeling going into muddy waters barefoot when you know there are crabs underneath, but it was absolutely fine and a really fun experience.
If you find any good ones, your guide will keep them and possibly even serve them up for lunch the next day. Which leads me to my next point, the food at Kodev is absolutely incredible and some of the best food I had during my trip to Sri Lanka.
Dolphin Spotting in Kalpitiya
Another incredible experience you can book during your stay at Kodev is dolphin watching. The guides at Kodev will take you out on a small boat to go and spot dolphins as they jump in and out of the water. It’s such a peaceful and magical experience to go as it’s a private tour without any crowds and the guides do not chase the dolphins which I love.
You’ll need to stay at Kodev to book this as it’s their guides who’ll take you out on the boat, I’ve left the link below if you’d like to book a stay there (and I really encourage you to).
Stay in a Luxury Hotel
Sri Lanka has some really incredible luxury hotels, from fancy villas with private pools to restored historical houses and luxury safari camps. I’ve listed some of my favourite luxury hotels in another post, I’ll link it below but there are so many impressive ones around the country.
Sri Lanka has a LOT of adventure to offer and after some back to back adventures, unwinding in a luxury hotel is such an amazing experience, I cannot recommend it enough. If you want to check out some of my favourite hotels in Sri Lanka, click the link below:

Bird Watching River Cruise in Galle
Galle is such a beautiful area of Sri Lanka to visit so if you find yourself in Galle, I’m sure you will be very exploring the town, walking the fort walls and coffee shop hopping too. But if you want do something a little different or unique in Galle then you must join this river cruise.
This is easily one of the best things I did in Sri Lanka, you leave at sunrise and go on a small boat slowly down the river and spot birds along the way. We saw some of the most beautiful and colourful birds here and it was such an amazing and serene way to start the day. If you want to go on a bird watching river cruise then click here to book the best one.

Walking Tour of Galle Fort
Galle Fort is full of history and one of the most popular towns in Sri Lanka for tourists to visit. The fort is still standing, and inside there is a beautiful old town with lots of cute coffee shops, beautiful hotels and restaurants and boutique shops.
But it’s not just a pretty town, there is so much to learn about Galle, and lots of amazing spots you’ll never find without a local which is why I really recommend going on a walking tour of Galle Fort, so you can learn all about this area of Sri Lanka and what makes it so special.
You can book a walking tour of Galle, here.

Traditional Jewellery Making Workshop
If you’re spending time in Galle and want to do something a little different, I highly recommend joining a traditional jewellery workshop just outside Galle Fort. Sri Lanka is known as Ratna Dweepa, meaning Gem Island, and this is such a beautiful way to properly understand why. You’ll learn how to identify genuine Ceylon sapphires, moonstones and garnets, whilst learning about the gemstones that come from this tiny island.
You’ll go to a small, family run workshop where silversmithing techniques have been passed down through generations. It’s a really lovely experience that feels personal and authentic rather than touristy, and you actually get to sit one on one with a master craftsman for a few hours to create your own piece that you can then take home. Click here to book a jewellery making workshop.
Rooftop Drinks at Charlie’s Bar & Bistro
This is one of the most popular spots for food and drinks, especially during sunset in Galle. Charlie’s Bar & Bistro is upstairs at the The Charleston hotel in Galle, one of the best hotels in the area. The bistro is upstairs and there is a huge terrace that looks over to the fort and has an amazing sunset view.
You can pop in for an afternoon tea, for lunch or for sunset drinks and dinner. The terrace is very popular during sunset hours, especially on the weekend so it’s worth planning ahead and booking a table if possible!

Whale Watching Mirissa
If you want to do something really magical, then you must go whale watching in Mirissa, it’s one of the most amazing things to do in Sri Lanka. On this whale watching trip you will have a good chance of seeing whales as well as dolphins out in the water.
This is one of the best ethical whale watching companies in Sri Lanka, so if you want to book it too, click here.
Take Photos at Coconut Tree Hill
Coconut Tree Hill is one of the most popular photo spots in Mirissa. It’s a hill with lots of huge palm trees and makes a really great background for photos, but as you can imagine it is full of tourists wanting to get the shot which can make it a little underwhelming. Because of this, I realise this spot isn’t for everyone, but for those wanting to get some cool shots, definitely add this spot to your Mirissa itinerary!

Drinks and Sunset at Secret Beach
Secret beach is one of the best spots along Sri Lanka’s south coast to watch the sunset. It’s tucked away near Mirissa and you can take a tuktuk or scooter to the top of the hill and then walk the rest of the way down. There is a bar and restaurant on the beach along with sun loungers if you want to sunbathe, and you can enjoy some drinks whilst looking out at the view.

Grab Soothie Bowls at Duni’s Hoppers
One of the best spots for coffee and smoothie bowls in the south of Sri Lanka is Duni’s Hoppers. You’ll find this cute coffee shop near Hiriketiya beach and it’s such a popular spot and for good reason. We didn’t try the hoppers here, although they looked amazing, as we really wanted one of their smoothie bowls and they didn’t disappoint! The smoothie bowls here are soooo so good, they’re fresh and full of amazing ingredients which I love. This is a must try!!
Take Surf Lessons in Weligama
If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to surf then Sri Lanka is such a great place to do it. In the South of Sri Lanka, you’ll find lots of beautiful beaches, including Weligama, a town that’s famous for surfing. Here you’ll find Surf & Stay, one of the best spots to take surf lessons whether you’re a beginner or want to improve your surfing skills.
You’ll meet other travellers with similar interests whilst you’re here too so it makes a great spot if you are travelling solo. Whether or not you are a beginner, you can take private surf lessons cater to surfers of all levels, offering personalised instruction and a comprehensive experience.
Click here if you want to book a surf lesson!

Snorkel with Turtles in Mirissa
This is one of the best things to do in Mirissa, Sri Lanka and so many people miss it! When you’re in Mirissa, you MUST go snorkelling with turtles, it’s soooo much fun. This tour is great even for those who haven’t been snorkelling before, as you’re not going into deep waters, or jumping off of boats or anything like that. You can see most of the fish and turtles just my floating in the water and do not even need to dive down which is great.
If you fancy swimming with turtles in Sri Lanka, click here to book.
Visit a Turtle Conservation
If you live animals, one of the most meaningful things you can do while travelling Sri Lanka is visit a turtle conservation project along the south coast. Sri Lanka is home to several species of sea turtles, and many of them are endangered, which makes protecting them important.
When you visit, you’ll learn about how injured turtles are rescued and rehabilitated, how eggs are protected from poachers and predators, and how the hatchlings are safely released back into the ocean. Seeing the tiny baby turtles up close is such a special experience, and it’s amazing to see how much work goes into protecting them.
If you do visit, make sure you choose an ethical, conservation-focused centre where the priority is genuinely the turtles’ wellbeing. I’ve listed a few options below:
Sip Fresh Coconuts on the Beach
I’m sure you can find fresh coconuts on most of the beaches in Sri Lanka, but this gorgeous spot is on Hiriketiya beach, and it was one of the best ways to chill out and relax on the beach. We spent a few hours sunbathing and swimming and then for a change of scenery, we stopped by this cute little shack for a fresh coconut. After you’ve drunk the fresh coconut, you can ask the staff to open the coconut for you so you can eat some of the coconut flesh. It’s soooo good.

Join a Yoga Class in Hiriketiya
Hiriketiya has a range of amazing yoga classes on offer, many of which are drop-in friendly and affordable too. As it’s an area known for yoga practice, there are plenty of places you can go, whether you prefer to be in a studio or out on the beach. There are various yoga styles and classes based on preference so it’s worth seeing what’s on whilst you’re in the area. I’ve listed a few popular spots to choose from, below:
Kamatha Dining Experience
This is easily one of the most incredible dining experiences in Sri Lanka. The Kamatha experience is a must do if you’re staying at Uga Ulagalla in Anuradhapura. Right in the paddy fields, you’ll get to try 25 incredible traditional dishes that are cooked fresh every evening by the amazing women from the local village.
The effort that goes into this experience is incredible, each dish has a story and there’s a lot of history behind these meals too. Be prepared for a LOT of eating as the dishes just keep coming and they’re all so good, you’ll want to try them all.

Sigiriya Village Tour and Traditional Lunch
Most people only visit the tourist spots in Sigiriya for a day or two and then leave, but the village itself is so lovely and well worth looking around if you’d like to do something a bit different to everyone else visiting Sri Lanka.
There’s a village tour and cooking class, ending in a traditional lunch you can join when you’re in Sigiriya and it’s a must do for travellers who love getting close to locals and enjoy a more authentic experience. You can book the village tour, cooking class and lunch, here.
Hike Pidurangala Rock at Sunrise
If you’re staying near Sigiriya, hiking Pidurangala Rock at sunrise is something I’d really recommend doing. It’s an early start if you want to catch the sunrise, but it’s completely worth it. The climb is a little more rugged than Sigiriya, especially towards the top where you’ll need to scramble over some rocks, but it’s easy to do, just make sure for the scrambling section, you have both hands free to help you climb.
Reaching the summit in time for the sunrise is such an amazing experience. As the sun rises, it slowly lights up Sigiriya Lion Rock in the distance, and the view is honestly incredible. There will be a bit of a crowd there as it’s one of the best things to do in Sigiriya, but it’s such a huge area that it doesn’t feel too busy. There are a few monkeys up there who will try to steal your food if you have any, so look out for those!
If you don’t fancy navigating on your own, then you can join a tour to hike the rock either at sunrise or sunset. It’s very affordable and a great way to meet new people, click here to join.

Explore Sigiriya Lion Rock
Climbing the 1,200 steps up to Sigiriya Lion Rock is one of the most iconic things to do in Sri Lanka, and it’s absolutely worth the early start. The walk up involves a fair few steps, including a narrow staircase attached to the side of the rock, which can be a little daunting for some but I promise it’s not that bad. Halfway up, you’ll pass the famous lion’s paws carved into the stone, which is where the name comes from.
Once you reach the top, the views are soooo beautiful. You can see endless greenery, and it’s a very peaceful place to enjoy the sunrise after your hike up. There’s a lot of history up here so definitely spend some time exploring it all once you’re up there.
Try Traditional Sri Lankan Food
I don’t know about you but for me, one of the best things about exploring a new country is trying the local food. Sri Lankan food is incredible, so make sure you don’t leave the country without trying these:
Rice and curry – This is the heart of Sri Lankan cuisine. You might get dhal, pumpkin, aubergine, jackfruit, beetroot, chicken or fish, plus different sambols on the side. Every place does it slightly differently, which I loveeee.
Egg hoppers – These are very unique to Sri Lanka and you’ll find them everywhere. They’re bowl-shaped pancakes made from fermented rice flour and coconut milk, with a soft egg cooked in the middle. Add a little chilli and coconut sambol and it’s honestly incredible.
Kottu roti – This is made by chopping up roti bread on a hot griddle with vegetables, egg or meat, it’s sooo good.
Coconut sambol – This comes with almost everything! Fresh coconut mixed with chilli, lime and onion makes such a good side dish.
Fresh seafood – If you’re staying on the coast, don’t skip the seafood. Grilled fish, prawns and crab cooked with spices and lime taste even better eaten by the beach (especially on a beach BBQ)!

Mihintale Royal Buddhist Temple
Mihintale is often considered the birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, it’s a site filled with history, quiet pathways and beautiful views so if you’re in the area and love history and culture, this is a must visit in Sri Lanka.
To reach the top, you’ll need to climb a long series of stone steps, but the walk up is part of the experience. At the summit, you’ll have the most amazing views that’ll make it all worth it, and it’s just a very peaceful and calm place to spend a few hours.
Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex
Visiting Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex is definitely one of the more unique things to do in Sri Lanka. It’s well-known for its narrow white tower that you can climb up. It feels like it goes right up into the sky, and it looks just as dramatic in real life as it does in photos (I’m sure you’ve seen this all over social media).
Climbing to the top isn’t for the faint-hearted to be really honest. The staircase gets incredibly narrow in places, and the higher you go, the windier it feels. But if you’re up for it, the views from the top are absolutely incredible, with rolling hills and mountains all around you.
Horton Plains-World’s End Tour From Nuwara Eliya
For something different and one of the most unique things to do in Sri Lanka, visit the Horton Plains National Park and the World’s End cliffs. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to one of the most beautiful landscapes in Sri Lanka and it’s well worth visiting during your Sri Lanka trip.
This tour starts in Nuwara Eliya, the famous tea plantation region of Sri Lanka and will take you to the Horton Plains National Park, where you can spot birds, lizards, bear monkey, and sambar deer. During your visit you’ll go on a 6 mile (9.5 kilometers) hike to World’s End, Baker’s Falls and back and get to experience the most beautiful scenery along the way.
Click here to join the Horton Plains-World’s End Tour from Nuwara Eliya.

Minneriya Jeep Safari to Visit Elephants Gathering
I don’t know why but I hardly ever see this National Park people’s Sri Lanka itineraries, but a jeep safari in Minneriya National Park is easily one of the best unique things to do in Sri Lanka. On this tour, you will see a huge heard of elephants gathering, which is such an incredible experience as often on safari tours you’ll see the odd one here and there and maybe a small group, but this is a whole different experience.
You can do the tour in the morning or during the afternoon, the afternoon is said to have lots more elephants than the morning. The drive is so beautiful and you might also see deer and various beautiful birds along the way. To book this hidden gem safari, click here.
Explore the Tea Plantations in Nuwara Eliya
Exploring the tea plantations in Nuwara Eliya is one of the best things to do if you love getting to know what the locals’ typical day looks like, if you enjoy getting stuck in and being surrounded by nature too. The landscape in Nuwara Eliya is full of rolling hills, filled with neat rows of tea bushes going for miles.
You can visit a working tea factory to see how the leaves are picked and processed, or simply spend time walking through the plantations themselves. The air feels much cooler up there so take a jacket, the pace is slower, and everything just feels peaceful. Of course you have to try some of the local tea afterwards, as a HUGE tea lover, that’s the best part.

Play a Round of Golf at Nuwara Eliya Golf Club
If you like golf and find yourself in Nuwara Eliya, playing a round of golf here might be well worth adding to your Sri Lanka itinerary. This spot is surrounded by rolling green hills and this course is one of the oldest in Asia. I know a lot of golf players enjoy playing in different areas around the world so this would definitely be a great setting to add to the portfolio and something a little different to do whilst in Sri Lanka.
Explore Polonnaruwa Ancient City
Many years ago, this ancient city was once the capital of Sri Lanka, and wandering through it now surrounded by ruins, temples and enormous Buddha statues, is such a special experience and something very unique to do in Sri Lanka.
The site is quite spread out, so most people explore by bicycle, which is fun. Cycling between archaeological sites with barely anyone around, feels peaceful and unhurried which is a nice change of pace after a few busy days or weeks exploring Sri Lanka. The Gal Vihara statues in particular are incredible, carved directly into the rock and still beautifully preserved.
Hike Little Adam’s Peak
Hiking Little Adam’s Peak is easily one of the best things to do in Ella, especially if you want incredible views without committing to a full-day trek. The walk itself is relatively easy, with a steady uphill path and steps towards the end, so it’s manageable for most people, just take your time and wear decent shoes (I say this, but I did do this hike in sandals and partly barefoot).
As you climb higher, you’ll see amazing views with rolling green hills and tea plantations, and it’s honestly so beautiful so make sure you take your camera with you. It’s a good idea to head up there in the morning or afternoon, rather than in the midday heat, especially if it is sunny. Personally, I recommend doing the hike in the morning and then as you head down, you can spend the afternoon in Ravana Pool Club to relax.

Hot Air Balloon Ride
One of the most magical things to do in Sri Lanka is to take a hot air balloon ride over Sigiriya. Hot air ballooning is available from November to May and is such a unique experience that’ll make your trip even more special. You’ll go early in the morning and go up in the balloon with beautiful morning light and some stunning views of the lakes, jungle and mountains surrounding you.
If you fancy booking a hot air balloon ride in Sri Lanka, click here.
Chill at Ravana Waterfall
If you want something chill and close to nature in Ella then head to Ravana waterfall. It’s right by the roadside, so you don’t need a long hike to reach it, which makes it perfect if you just want a quick break in between exploring.
The waterfall is beautiful, and there are lots of spots to chill and enjoy the view. You’ll usually see locals and travellers sitting on the rocks, dipping their feet in or even taking a swim if the conditions are safe.

Spend the Day at Ravana Pool Club
If you’re in Ella and fancy something a little more laid-back, spending the day at Ravana Pool Club is such a fun option. After a few early mornings hiking and exploring, it’s the perfect place to slow down for a few hours and chill out, something I wish I did more of, as after one month of non-stop exploring, I was pretty exhausted.
You can relax by the pool with views of the surrounding hills, order some food and just properly switch off for a bit which feels amazing. It feels modern and stylish, but still fits beautifully into the lush, green setting around Ella and if relaxing for a long time isn’t really your thing, you can combine this with a little hike up Little Adam’s Peak which is right next to the pool club.
Take the Famous Ella to Kandy Train Ride
The train journey between Ella and Kandy is easily one of the most beautiful experiences you can have in Sri Lanka and you’ll see it all over social media with photos of people hanging out of the train as it’s moving. It’s often described as one of the most scenic train rides in the world, and honestly, it lives up to the hype.
The train is not fast and it’s not luxurious, but it’s an amazing journey with stunning views along the way. If you want to take the famous photos hanging out of the door, just always make sure you’re looking ahead and staying safe as there will often be narrow passageways and tunnels for you to hurt yourself on or even get knocked out of the train.

Watch the Train go Over Nine Arches Bridge
Watching the train cross Nine Arches Bridge is one of the most popular things to do in Sri Lanka and I’m sure you’ve seen it all over Instagram. Tucked away in the jungle just outside Ella, the bridge is surrounded by thick greenery, rolling hills and the most beautiful scenery.
You’ll usually need to check the train times and wait a little while, but I promise it really is worth the wait. You’ll see a few crowds around but don’t worry as there are a lot of spots to take photos from, including nearby cafes with amazing views of the bridge.

Explore the Royal Botanic Gardens
If you’re planning to stay in Kandy whilst you’re in Sri Lanka then you have to explore the Royal Botanic Gardens. The gardens are near Kandy and makes the perfect place to spend a chill afternoon, especially if you enjoy being outdoors but don’t necessarily want a full-on hike.
The gardens are huge, they’re beautifully maintained and filled with palm trees, tropical plants and colourful flowers. You can just wander around the gardens without much of a plan, taking your time and definitely taking lots of photos.
White Water Rafting on Mahaweli River from Kandy
Looking for something unique to do in Sri Lanka? For all of the adventure lovers, this might just be one of the best things to do. Why not spend your day going through the rapids of the Mahaweli River on a full-day white water rafting tour from Kandy.
This adventure involves tackling 5 major and 4 minor rapids but don’t worry, you’ll be with a knowledgeable guide who ensures safety throughout the whole journey. If this sounds like your kind of adventure then click here to book now.
Join an Authentic Cooking Class
If you’ve had Sri Lankan food then you’ll already know that it’s some of the best food in the world so of course, an authentic cooking class is a must when in Sri Lanka. Learn to make traditional Sri Lankan curries, dhal, hoppers and so much more.
There are cooking classes all over Sri Lanka so I’ll recommend a few of the best ones below and you can pick the one that’s closest to you and works with your itinerary.

Bentota River Safari (Mangrove & Wildlife Encounter)
Most Sri Lanka itineraries include safaris in Yala, the huge National Park in the south of Sri Lanka and whilst that absolutely a must- do, I personally think this is too, yet it’s still a real hidden gem in Sri Lanka. This tour is very different to the ones in Yala. Instead of leopards and elephants, you’ll be spotting crocodiles, lizards and monkeys.
You’ll be relaxing on a 2-hour cruise along the Bentota River, enjoying the beautiful peaceful views whilst spotting a range of wildlife. If you love nature and animal spotting, you’ll love this. You will be able to spot birds, lizards, monkeys, and maybe even crocodiles on this river cruise. If this sounds like something you’d like to do in Sri Lanka, then click here to book.
Sinharaja Rainforest Tour
This one is for all of the nature lovers visiting Sri Lanka who want to do something a little different. There is a private tour you can join to explore the Sinharaja Rainforest, where you can spot native wildlife such as monkeys, snakes, and even chameleons.
Taking a private tour through the rainforest lets you explore at your own pace, so you can stop to admire and ask questions about the tropical flora and fauna. You’ll be with knowledgable guides who will be able to answer all the questions you may have and it’s a really unique experience you can do whilst in Sri Lanka.
If this sounds interesting to you, then click here to book.
Spot Leopards on a Safari Drive in Yala
One of the most magical moments during my one month in Sri Lanka was on a morning safari drive in Yala National Park. The safari drives are usually in the morning around sunrise and again in the afternoon at sunset, this is because during this time, the animals come out of hiding to feed, so you’re more likely to see them roaming around.
In Yala National Park, you can spot leopards, which is one of the most amazing experiences in Sri Lanka. You’ll of course see lots of elephants, crocodiles, deer, birds and so many more animals, but spotting the leopard isn’t as easy, but after a couple of drives, hopefully you will be lucky enough to see one or two roaming around.

Enjoy a Beach BBQ
There’s no better way to end your busy day exploring than with a beach BBQ in the most beautiful setting. Uga Chena Huts is right on the beach as well as being just outside of Yala National Park so after a busy day out on safari drives, you can come back for sundowners and a beach BBQ.
The chefs at Uga Chena Huts are incredible. They book fresh seafood right there on the beach for you and there’s a bonfire, lots of candlelights and it’s a really beautiful setting.

Join a Batik Workshop
This is easily one of the most unique experiences in Sri Lanka. If you fancy doing something a little different and being creative whilst learning something new, then joining a batik workshop is a must do.
Batik is a traditional dyeing technique using wax, that originated in Indonesia and was introduced to Sri Lanka in the 19th Century. You can apply wax to the fabric in a particular pattern and then dye the fabric. The dye will not reach where the wax has been placed so once you remove the wax, you’re left with your pattern!
You’ll learn how to do this and create your own design during the workshop and get to take your masterpiece home at the end. It’s such a fun experience, you get to do something traditional and creative, and you leave with your own souvenir too.
Click here to join a batik workshop in Kandy.
See the Sea Turtle & Stilt Fishermen on a River Safari
If you want to see a mix of nature, culture and enjoy a bit of an authentic Sri Lankan experience, then this sea turtle and stilt fishermen river safari is a must!
The tour will pick you up and drop you off from a huge range of locations in the south of Sri Lanka, and you’ll start with a river cruise through the mangroves where you’ll spot crocodiles, water monitors and birds. Then, you’ll visit the sea turtle conservation in Induruwa, before heading to the village Ambalangoda to see traditional wood carvings, and then visit the Community Tsunami Museum. You’ll then go and explore Galle Dutch Fort, and end your day witnessing traditional stilt fishing which is such an interesting and unique practice.
Bundala National Park Safari
If you love bird watching then this safari is definitely for you. Bundala National Park Safari drives are so often missed off of peoples’ Sri Lanka itineraries but for those who love bird watching and being close to nature, this day out from Hambantota Port is a must.
On this safari drive you will spot over a hundred common, rare and endangered migratory birds that make their temporary homes in this National Park. Along the way, you may also spot a number of colourful butterfly species, various mammals (such as elephants), amphibians and more. It’s such a lovely day out and definitely one of the most unique things to do in Sri Lanka.

Colombo Local Food Tour by Tuk Tuk
One of the best ways to try a range of amazing Sri Lankan food and drinks with on a local food tour. Better yet, these food tours in Colombo are done by tuk tuk, so you can explore the city like a local.
Enjoy crispy Isso Vade, flaky samosas and golden cheese balls as well as some local favourites like hoppers with katta sambol, spicy Kothu Roti, and rich crab curry served with pittu. Try a cup of fragrant Ceylon tea, a refreshing king coconut, and finish with creamy curd and treacle, a staplel local dessert that is sooo good. Book a local food tour, here.
Visit Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque
Known locally as the Red Mosque, Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque has a bright red and white patterned exterior that really does stand out, and it’s a must visit if you’re spending some time in Colombo.
You can’t always go inside if there’s a service happening, but walking around the mosque and the surrounding area is fascinating. It’s full of small shops and (very) busy streets, giving you a real feel for daily life in Colombo. If you can go in through, I recommend that you do as it is really beautiful inside. You’ll have to join a tour if you wish to visit, and they provide cover ups, so don’t worry if you are not prepared.

Colombo City Tour by Tuk Tuk
If you want to see the best that Colombo has to offer, then it’s best to go on a tour with a local, one who knows the history, the hidden gems and the best spots around the city. Your guide will make sure you see a range of landmarks around the city, and will be able to tell you all about them, giving you a must better insight than just strolling by them yourself without any information.
You can join a city tuk tuk tour, here.
